Drinking, sobriety and high risk drinking situations of discharged alcoholic patients in community

Abstract
Recovering is a process which has stages and tasks to achieve and alcoholic¡¯s environment can facilitate recovery or increase the risk of relapse. The purpose of this study is to explore the drinking & sobriety characteristics and related factors of discharged alcoholics patients. Subjects were 201 recruited from the members of A.A and community mental health centers and snowball sampling. Results showed that high rate of family history and chronic drinking patterns, high rate of relapses, long term hospitalization of subjects. The alcohol related damaged area showed marital conflicts, financial problems, job related problems. Most of subjects reported abstinence experiences, strong motives to sobriety and recovering alcoholics experienced financial problems, social pressure to drink, family member¡¯s poor insight to sobriety. Self-help group attendance, awareness of self help group, motives of sobriety were significantly related to the period of sobriety. The high risk drinking situations identified unpleasant emotions, social pressure to drink, pleasant times with others, conflict with others etc. For the effective rehabilitation program of discharged alcoholics, implications of the findings were discussed.
